Customs
India charges IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax) 18% plus duty by goods category. Personal gifts up to 10,000 INR (~€110) have a simplified regime. For commercial shipments the recipient needs an IEC (Importer Exporter Code). Electronics require BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification. Delivery times are long due to customs processing — DHL and FedEx have dedicated customs teams in India.
Required documents
- CN22 is a simplified customs declaration for parcels up to 2 kg and €270 in value. Completed at the post office or generated by the carrier. Without CN22, the parcel may be held at customs.

Frequently asked questions
Can I send beef jerky to India?
No. Beef and beef products are prohibited in India for religious and cultural reasons (the cow is sacred in Hinduism, the majority faith). The shipment will be seized at the border. Chicken or fish products are generally fine but must be properly declared.
